May Book Recommendations

Grade 1-5 recommendations:

1. Charlotte's Web by E.B White

The fiction story follows a young pig named Wilbur and his spider friend named Charlotte. After learning that his days are numbered, Wilbur goes to Charlotte for help who uses her weaving and literate skills to formulate a plan to save him.

2. Mathilda by Roald Dahl

This fantasy fiction story is about a young girl named Mathilda who is extremely smart for her age. Sadly, with lazy parents and a mean headmistress, the environment she is in doesn't let her use her full potential. The story follows Mathilda as she befriends her teacher, Ms. Honey, and tries to teach her parents and her headmistress a lesson.

3. Judy Moody Was in a Mood by Megan McDonald

This is the 1st book in the series and it follows Judy Moody through her first month of third grade and the adventures she goes on with her friends and her brother as she attempts to create an (all about) "Me Board" for her class project. Be warned though, she's a bit moody!

4. Magic Treehouse: Dinosaurs Before Dark by Mary Pope Osborne

This is the first book in a historical fiction series that follows siblings Jack and Annie. One day while walking in the woods close to their home in Frog Creek, Pennsylvania, they come across a mysterious tree house filled with books. When Jack opens a book on dinosaurs and wishes that he could see a pteranodon for real, the treehouse takes them back to the time of the dinosaurs.


5. Frog and Toad Are Friends by Arnold Lobel

This is the first book in a fiction series about a frog and a toad. The book follows their adventures through the form of five simple short stories.


Grade 6-8 recommendations:

1. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

This romance book follows a girl named Hazel who has been diagnosed with lung cancer and attends a cancer support group. There, she meets Augustus and together they go on a trip in search of the author of their favorite book and start to learn more about each other.

2. Thirteen by Steve Cavanagh

This murder-mystery book is told through two perspectives, a lawyer named Eddie Flynn and the killer named Joshua Kane. The story follows them both as Eddie attempts to solve the murder trial of the century by proving his client, a famous actor named Robert isn't the killer but rather that the killer, is on the jury, and meanwhile, Kane attempts to pull a few strings behind the trial...

3. Animal Farm by George Orwell

This dystopian novel tells the story of a group of farm animals who rebel against their human farmer, hoping to create a society where the animals can be equal, free, and happy. The book is meant to reflect the events of the Russian Evolution of 1917.

4. Phantoms by Dean Koontz

This supernatural thriller follows a woman named Dr. Jennifer Paige, a resident of the small ski town, and her younger sister Lisa. As they arrive in Snowfield, they discover the town's population either dead or missing. The story follows them both as they attempt to get to the bottom of the mystery only to find something larger than normal at play...

5. The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey

This science-fiction book follows 16-year-old Cassie Sullivan who tries to find her younger brother as she also tries to survive in a world devastated by the waves of an alien invasion that has already destroyed most of the Earth's population and knocked humankind back to the Stone Age.
