Benefits of Student Volunteer Work

Students have a lot of time over the summer in which they can volunteer or work a job. It can result to be very valuable for them and their future as working over the summer is beneficial in time availability, giving a student experience and skills, and an opportunity for academic credit.

Volunteering or working a job is perfectly timed as there are fewer things to focus on. During the school year, many students are busy due to the school work that is given which is also why they don’t get as much of an opportunity to put focus into extracurricular activities, thus also increasing productivity over summer.

Whether it be a job or volunteering, they both give a student personal experience to not only help them figure out what career they want to pursue, but gives them an opportunity to build on many skills that will stay with them over their lifetime. One of the many skills they learn is time management. Students who work understand the challenges of a task-oriented schedule and have the opportunity to consider how they will balance all of their responsibilities. They will learn to set priorities and will learn to balance their work-life with their social life and family life. Working also helps build skills of confidence and independence by putting them in positions where they have to work with new people, attempt new things, and manage their own tasks. Communication is also another skill many students learn. Students benefit from having frequent conversations with individuals who are not their friends or family members as they learn to converse with individuals who do not know or like them.

Another very integral benefit of volunteering or working a job is an opportunity for academic recognition and credit. There is a possibility for people to receive scholarships if they have volunteered a specific amount of hours. The scholarship can give a student a good reputation especially if they are pursuing post-secondary education in college or university. Work experience also has the possibility of being recognized in school clubs relating to the job they may have done. Both volunteering and working could be included in a resume as prior relevant work experience or volunteer experience for a career!

Volunteering or working a job over the summer is advantageous as it is perfectly timed for one to volunteer or work a job, giving a student experience and skills and opportunity for academic recognition. Volunteering or working a job can be helpful not only for one person but for many others too!
